Common TSSPDCL bill traps

TGSPDCL is southern Telangana only

TGSPDCL (also called TSSPDCL) covers Hyderabad and 14 southern districts. The 18 northern districts, with headquarters at Hanumakonda, are served by a separate company, TGNPDCL — both share the same TSERC tariff shown here.

Gruha Jyothi requires a white ration card

The 200-free-units scheme is tied specifically to holding a white ration card, not just being a domestic consumer generally — check your card status rather than assuming eligibility.

6% electricity duty applies on top of slabs

Telangana's 6% electricity duty is charged on the energy charge in addition to the slab rates and fixed charge, and is often overlooked when estimating a bill by hand.

How the TSSPDCL bill is calculated

Gruha Jyothi free 200 units

Domestic consumers with a white ration card get up to 200 units free each month under the Gruha Jyothi scheme. Above that, telescopic slabs apply, plus a 6% electricity duty. TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL share the same TSERC tariff.

How the Telangana bill is calculated

Telangana domestic supply is billed monthly. Consumption is split across telescopic slabs from ₹1.95 to ₹6.5/unit, each band charged at its own rate. A fixed charge of ₹10 per kW of sanctioned load applies, plus a 6% electricity duty.

Your bill, component by component

Based on the 250-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.

Energy chargeReducible₹1,057.50+

Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹1,057.50.

Fuel cost adjustment (FCA)Set by DISCOM₹0.00+

A ₹0/unit pass-through surcharge that tracks the DISCOM's power-purchase cost. It applies equally to every consumer on this tariff and isn't something you can reduce by changing usage.

Fixed chargeFixed₹30.00+

Charged regardless of how many units you use (₹10/kW × 3 kW). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.

Electricity dutyStatutory₹63.45+

A 6% state government levy on the energy charge — set by statute, not by the DISCOM, and not reducible by usage pattern.

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill

Swap CFL for LED bulbs

Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹90.53/year at Telangana's top slab rate (₹6.89/unit) — per bulb.

Upgrade to a 5-star AC

A 1.5 ton 5-star AC vs 3-star, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹3,840.58/year in Telangana.

Tips to reduce your TSSPDCL bill

  • Confirm your eligibility for Gruha Jyothi (up to 200 free units) is correctly marked on your account — it's worth 200 free units every cycle.
  • Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹6.50/unit cost the most.
  • For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first. Estimate your solar payback →

About TSSPDCL

When the state of Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated on 2 June 2014 under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, the distribution business serving the newly created Telangana was restructured into two companies: Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TGSPDCL, also referred to as TSSPDCL) and Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TGNPDCL).

TGSPDCL covers Hyderabad and 14 other southern districts (including Rangareddy, Medchal, Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar), serving around 11.1 million consumers. TGNPDCL covers the 18 northern districts from Hanumakonda.

Does TGSPDCL (TSSPDCL) supply electricity to Hyderabad?

Yes. TGSPDCL covers Hyderabad along with 14 southern Telangana districts. The 18 northern districts are served by the separate Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company (TGNPDCL), on the same TSERC tariff.

How to check and pay your bill

  1. 1Visit the official TGSPDCL website or Citizen app
  2. 2Enter your Unique Service Number (USC) to fetch your current bill
  3. 3Verify the amount and pay via UPI, card or net banking
  4. 4Save the payment receipt for your records

Frequently asked questions

Is the Telangana electricity tariff telescopic?

Yes. Telangana charges telescopically: each slab is billed at its own rate, so moving up a slab does not re-price your cheaper units.

What is the fixed charge for a Telangana domestic connection?

The fixed charge is ₹10 per kW of sanctioned load.

How accurate is this Telangana bill estimate?

It uses the published domestic slab rates and is a close estimate, not a billing-grade figure. Always confirm against your official TSSPDCL bill.

Does TGSPDCL/TSSPDCL supply Hyderabad?

Yes. TGSPDCL (Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana, sometimes still called TSSPDCL) covers Hyderabad along with 14 other southern districts. The remaining 18 northern districts are served by TGNPDCL.

How do I check or pay my TGSPDCL bill online?

Pay via the official portal at tgsouthernpower.org or the TGSPDCL Citizen app. For queries, call the 24×7 helpline 1912 or 1800-599-01912.

What is TGSPDCL, and how did it form?

When Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated on 2 June 2014 under the AP Reorganisation Act, the erstwhile APSEB's southern distribution arm serving the new Telangana state was restructured and renamed Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TGSPDCL/TSSPDCL).
