What are slabs in electricity billing?

Most Indian DISCOMs bill domestic electricity using telescopic slabs — tiered per-unit rates that rise as your consumption increases.

• Each slab has its own rate — for example the first 100 units might be billed at one rate and the next 100 at a higher one.
• Slabs are telescopic, not retroactive — only the units that fall inside a higher slab are billed at that slab's rate, not your entire consumption.
• The slab count resets every billing cycle — monthly, bimonthly or quarterly, depending on your DISCOM.
• Some DISCOMs add a fuel cost adjustment or electricity duty on top of the slab rate — see the tariff table above for what applies here.

How to read your meter

Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

How does SBPDCL compare?

SBPDCL's top domestic slab rate is ₹7.96/unit — cheaper than JBVNL (₹6.85/unit), — cheaper than WBSEDCL (₹6.81/unit), — cheaper than UPPCL (₹7.00/unit). Billing cycles also differ: SBPDCL bills monthly, while JBVNL bills monthly, WBSEDCL bills quarterly, UPPCL bills monthly.

Energy saving tips for Bihar electricity bills

Net metering explained

Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first.

• 2012 — Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) unbundled on 1 November 2012, under Section 14 of the Electricity Act 2003, into five successor companies.
• Today — South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (SBPDCL) serves 17 southern districts — including Patna, Nalanda, Gaya and Bhagalpur — covering over 50 lakh consumers.
• Today — North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (NBPDCL) covers the northern districts on the same BSEB-successor tariff.

Does SBPDCL supply electricity to Patna?

Yes. Patna is part of SBPDCL's south Bihar territory. If your connection is in a northern district — such as Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga or Purnia — your discom is NBPDCL instead, on the same tariff shown here.
