Common MPCZ bill traps
MPCZ doesn't cover Indore
Madhya Pradesh has three regional distribution companies. MPCZ covers Bhopal and central MP; Indore and the western Malwa region are billed by MPWZ instead, on a similar but separately-administered tariff.
The Atal Griha Jyoti cap isn't automatic here
Households using 100 units or less with a sanctioned load of 1 kW or below can have their entire bill capped at ₹100 under this scheme — but it requires eligibility and isn't applied automatically by this calculator.
The VCA surcharge moves and isn't included
MPCZ's ₹0.30/unit variable cost adjustment can change, and isn't reflected in this estimate, so your real bill may differ slightly.
How the MPCZ bill is calculated
Atal Griha Jyoti — a ₹100 bill cap
Under the Atal Griha Jyoti Yojana, eligible low-load (≤1 kW) households using 100 units or less a month have their entire bill capped at a flat ₹100. Above that, normal telescopic slabs and a ₹0.30/unit VCA surcharge apply.
How the Madhya Pradesh bill is calculated
Madhya Pradesh domestic supply is billed monthly. Consumption is split across telescopic slabs from ₹4.25 to ₹7.25/unit, each band charged at its own rate. A fixed charge of ₹20 per kW of sanctioned load applies, and a ₹0.3/unit fuel/variable-cost surcharge.
Your bill, component by component
Based on the 200-unit example above. Expand each line for what it means and whether you can influence it.
Energy chargeReducible₹1,085.00+
Priced across telescopic slabs — the more you use, the higher the marginal rate. Shifting usage below your next slab threshold lowers this line directly. This example totals ₹1,085.00.
Fuel cost adjustment (FCA)Set by DISCOM₹60.00+
A ₹0.3/unit pass-through surcharge that tracks the DISCOM's power-purchase cost. It applies equally to every consumer on this tariff and isn't something you can reduce by changing usage.
Fixed chargeFixed₹60.00+
Charged regardless of how many units you use (₹20/kW × 3 kW). The only way to change this line is to change your phase, sanctioned load, or connection type.
What's included in your bill
| Component | What it is | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Energy charge | Units × slab rate, telescopic | ₹4.25–₹7.25/unit |
| Fuel cost adjustment | Pass-through fuel surcharge | ₹0.3/unit |
| Fixed charge | Flat, independent of usage | ₹20/kW of sanctioned load |
How to read your meter
Digital meters show a running total in kWh ("units") on an LCD display — write down the number before the decimal point. To find your consumption for a billing period, subtract your previous reading from your current reading; that is exactly what the "Meter reading" mode in the calculator above does for you. Analog meters use a set of dial gauges read left to right — note the number the pointer has just passed on each dial.

Tools that cut your bill
Swap CFL for LED bulbs
Replacing a 15W CFL with a 9W LED bulb, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹99.21/year at Madhya Pradesh's top slab rate (₹7.55/unit) — per bulb.
Upgrade to a 5-star AC
A 1.5 ton 5-star AC vs 3-star, run 6 hrs/day, saves about ₹4,208.47/year in Madhya Pradesh.

MPCZ's top domestic slab rate is ₹7.25/unit — more expensive than MSEDCL (₹9.56/unit), — cheaper than UPPCL (₹7.00/unit), — more expensive than CSPDCL (₹8.30/unit). Billing cycles also differ: MPCZ bills monthly, while MSEDCL bills monthly, UPPCL bills monthly, CSPDCL bills monthly.
Tips to reduce your MPCZ bill
- Where practical, keep usage below your next slab threshold — the marginal units above ₹7.25/unit cost the most.
- The ₹0.3/unit fuel cost adjustment applies to every unit you use, so reducing overall consumption reduces this line too — unlike the fixed charge.
- For high-usage households, rooftop solar can offset your most expensive top-slab units — see the solar section above.
Net metering explained
Net metering lets a rooftop solar system export surplus power back to the grid through your existing meter, which runs in reverse. At billing time, your DISCOM credits the exported units against what you drew from the grid — you're billed only for the net difference. Combined with telescopic slabs, this typically offsets your most expensive units first. Estimate your solar payback →
About MPCZ
The Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board (MPSEB) was unbundled in July 2002 under the state's power sector reform, with MPSEB continuing as a holding company over three regional distribution companies — MP Madhya Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Co. (MPCZ, central), MP Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Co. (MPWZ, west) and MP Poorv Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Co. (MPEZ, east) — plus separate generation and transmission companies.
MPCZ serves Bhopal, Gwalior and the Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Gwalior and Chambal commissionaries. Indore falls under MPWZ instead.
Does MPCZ supply electricity to Indore?
No. Indore and the western Malwa region (including Ujjain) are served by MPWZ (MP Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Co.), a separate regional discom. MPCZ covers Bhopal, Gwalior and central Madhya Pradesh.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Madhya Pradesh electricity tariff telescopic?
Yes. Madhya Pradesh charges telescopically: each slab is billed at its own rate, so moving up a slab does not re-price your cheaper units.
What is the fixed charge for a Madhya Pradesh domestic connection?
The fixed charge is ₹20 per kW of sanctioned load.
How accurate is this Madhya Pradesh bill estimate?
It uses the published domestic slab rates and is a close estimate, not a billing-grade figure. The Atal Griha Jyoti ₹100 cap is not applied automatically here. Always confirm against your official MPCZ bill.
Does MPCZ supply electricity to Indore?
No. MPCZ (Madhya Kshetra) covers Bhopal, Gwalior and the central commissionaries of Bhopal, Hoshangabad and Chambal. Indore is served by a separate company, MPWZ (Paschim Kshetra), covering the western Malwa region including Ujjain.
How do I check or pay my MPCZ bill online?
Pay via the MP Online portal at mpeb.mponline.gov.in, or the official MPCZ website. For queries, call the 24×7 toll-free helpline 1912 or 1800-233-1912.
What is MPCZ, and how did it form?
The Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board (MPSEB) was unbundled in July 2002, under the state's power reform act, into five companies with MPSEB as holding entity — three regional distribution companies (MPCZ, MPWZ, MPEZ) plus separate generation and transmission companies.
